What should I expect?
What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a science-based healthcare profession that promotes recovery in illness, injury or disability. It aims to restore movement and functional ability to the person’s full potential. Physiotherapy is an independent profession where practitioners make their own treatment decisions and clinical judgements. They constantly reassess the results of their treatments and adjust their approach.
What happens during the appointment?
Your first appointment is called an Initial Assessment, although we aim to both assess your problem and deliver some treatment during this session. In order to make a thorough assessment, the Physiotherapist will take a full history of your condition and will undertake a physical examination. This will require asking you to perform certain movements. The Physiotherapist will also move the affected body part to examine all relevant structures. Throughout your appointment, the Physiotherapist will inform you of what they are going to do, before they do it, and will be happy to answer any questions and queries that you might have about the physiotherapy process.
How many sessions will I need?
At the end of the assessment your therapist will advise you of your condition and discuss a plan for going forward with treatment and rehabilitation. The number of sessions required to deliver appropriate treatment will vary depending on a number of factors, such as the nature and severity of the problem, and the age and health of the patient.
Response to Physiotherapy intervention varies from person to person and it is not always possible to accurately predict your response to a specific modality, procedure, or exercise protocol. This means it is not possible to guarantee your reaction will be to a specific treatment, nor does it guarantee that the treatment will help resolve the condition that you are seeking treatment for.
Although not our intention, there is a small possibility that Physiotherapy treatment may result an aggravation of existing symptoms or may cause post treatment soreness. In this case, please inform your Physiotherapist as soon as this occurs.
It is your right to decline any part of your treatment at any time before or during treatment, should you feel any discomfort or pain or have other unresolved concerns. It is your right to ask your therapist about the treatment they have planned based on your individual history, physiotherapy diagnosis, symptoms, and examination results. Consequently, it is your right to discuss the potential risks and benefits involved in your treatment.
What should I wear?
We recommend that you wear appropriate clothing to allow the Physiotherapist to see and move the affected body part. We suggest loose-fitting shorts if it is a lower limb problem or a loose-fitting vest if it is an upper limb or spinal problem.
